Questions people ask
Why will nothing open my .heic photos?
HEIC is the format iPhones use by default since iOS 11. It saves space, and Windows, older Macs, and most websites still cannot open it. Converting to JPG fixes that everywhere.
Is this free, and do I need an account?
Free every day up to the daily cap shown under the tool, with no account and no email. A plan removes the cap and converts any number at once.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The decoder (libheif, compiled to WebAssembly) runs inside this page. For family photos in particular, that matters: nobody else ever has a copy.
How do I stop my iPhone making HEIC files at all?
Settings, Camera, Formats, then choose Most Compatible. New photos save as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, which is what this tool is for.
It says the file could not be decoded.
Some apps save a JPG with a .heic name; rename it to .jpg and it will open. Live Photos and burst shots can also fail, so export a still from the Photos app first.
Does converting lose quality?
Slightly, because JPG is lossy. At quality 90, the default here, the difference is invisible for normal viewing and printing. Choose PNG if you want no loss at all, at a much larger file size.
